Bare Eyed Cockatoo

Also known as Little Corella

Bare Eyed Cockatoo

Latin name

(Cacatua pastinator pastinator)

Vital Statistics

Body length: 14 ins / 35 cm

Life span: 50-60 yrs

Appearance:

Bare Eyed Cockatoo, may not be so striking in facial colouration as other subspecies. With Greyish white feathers and curved, short white beaks, Little Corellas are attractive birds. Their periopthalmic rings are blue-grey, and they have less pale red coloration about their beaks than other Little Corellas. Generally there is a pale yellow colouring in the nostril region, which is more noticeable than the pink. Their feathers occasionally have a pinkish orange tinge to their bases, which is especially evident about the bird’s lores. The heads of Little Corellas are topped with a lovely curving crest.

Personality:

This cockatoo species has a lively, silly personality. They're very loving, affectionate birds. Extremely playful and interactive, they often pluck their feathers; so be sure to provide lots of toys and branches for them to chew on, fending off boredom. The Bare-Eyed is an excellent pet in a medium size! A well-raised cockatoo is an absolute doll; a hog for attention, a socialite (cockatoos are not usually one-person birds). The Bare Eyed Cockatoo is generally sweet and can be taught to talk and do tricks! They are, in fact, considered to be the best talkers of all Cockatoos, but be careful; they are also good at escaping! Little Corellas love to chew and can often bite their way out of wire cages

Bare Eyed Cockatoos also do very well when kept in pairs.

All in all the Bare Eyed Cockatoo makes any excellent pet for anyone who is familiar with cockatoos.

On the other hand, a badly-raised in the wrong hands is a nightmare!

Buying:

Buying from a breeder is preferable to buying from a pet shop, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the price; pet shops generally charge about double what breeders do. A good breeder will spend a lot of time on socialization of your baby bird, cuddling it, loving it, as well as providing many toys and other enrichment. A good breeder teaches a baby cockatoo how to play on it's own, as well as how to get attention in ways other than screaming - a common problem in cockatoos. Even if nothing major goes wrong, cockatoos are notorious for being very difficult to wean, and weaned wrong they could develop behaviour problems. Leave it to the experts! And buy a fully weaned baby
